Twenty minutes later, I had a cannoli cake in a bag and stood in Scout's favorite pizza place, waiting for our pizzas. A familiar voice got my attention, and I turned to see Kristin and DJ, who I've learned is Maleki's brother, coming into the restaurant. I didn't draw attention to myself as I watched them approach the counter. A wave of guilt passed over me, this time about Alana. I couldn't help feeling that I was fucking everything up regarding Scout. But maybe... maybe I could take a small step toward correcting one of my mistakes now.
"King?" The woman behind the counter called. I stepped up, took my pizzas from her, and left the restaurant. I waited nervously for Kristin and DJ to come out at the side out of sight. When they did, I followed them to their car silently. They reached the black SUV, and I quickly moved to Kristin's side before she could get in.
I cleared my throat to get her attention, and she turned to face me with a questioning look. I looked at her and then at DJ, sitting in the driver's seat, looking curious. Right, time to man up a little. "Can you give Alana a message for me?" I asked.
"Who are you?" Kristin asked.
"That's not important. Can you... can you tell her that Scout is safe and will hopefully be home soon?" The words rushed out of my mouth before I could change my mind.
Kristin's eyes widened. "What did you just say?" She turned to look at DJ, who was lifting his phone to his ear.
I backed away from them. "Just tell her, ok? Scout is fine. She's just helping us get our sister back. As soon as she does, she will come home."
"Wait!" Kristin said as Cyrus suddenly appeared with Maleki and Rafe in tow.
"Sorry," I said quickly as I blinked away before they could stop me. My heart pounded as I randomly blinked to several more locations. I hadn't forgotten that Scout said Cyrus was the one who had hunted her down when she had run away from her father before they struck up a deal to work together instead. The last thing we needed was me to lead them back to our apartment. Fuck. Was that stupid? I wasn't sure. I still felt rather good about it, so I was going to go with it wasn't stupid. Now they at least knew that Scout was safe.
When I blinked back home, my brothers and mate were cuddled up on the couch watching Doctor Who. I couldn't understand the fascination with the show, but Knight was a Super Whovian, and surprisingly, Scout enjoyed the show as well, unless they were watching an episode with Clara. Scout couldn't stand her character toward the end and usually spent the entire episode randomly shouting derogatory names at the TV whenever she was on the screen.
"That took longer than expected," Scout commented as she got up and took the pizzas from me.
"Yeah, uhh, they were busy tonight," I told her as I followed her into the kitchen.
